About SciCoW

A four-week virtual program where biology students build confidence with Python, meet scientists who code, and prepare for an optional in-person capstone.

What is SciCoW?

SciCoW is a free four-week virtual scientific computing program for students in biology and related fields. It combines live Zoom sessions, self-paced practice, office hours, and guest speakers. Students work in teams of five or six, with instructors facilitating rather than relying on traditional lectures.

The virtual program runs July 13–August 6, 2026. Students who complete it may also join the optional in-person capstone on August 12, 2026.

What you will learn

You will learn the basics of Python through a structured CodeHS online course and see how coding applies to biological research. The emphasis is on building practical confidence: reading code, solving small problems, working with teammates, and connecting computational ideas to real biological questions.

Participants who complete the program receive a certificate. SciCoW is not a University of Iowa credit-bearing course.

The Friday series introduces students to people who use computing across biology, biotechnology, industry, and computer science education. Meet the 2026 invited speakers.

Who should apply?

The program is designed primarily for undergraduate students in biology and related majors. Graduate students with a strong need and interest are also welcome. No prior coding experience is required, and we particularly welcome first-generation college students to apply.

Teams and peer leaders

Each team includes five or six students. One participant may serve as a peer team leader: the leader learns the same material as everyone else while helping organize the group and encourage peer support. You may indicate interest in this role on the application.

How to apply

Complete the application form and tell us about your motivation and how coding could support your studies. Applicants are selected based on motivation and potential to apply the skills; selected participants are notified by email.
